Blues Night @Timbre

Free entry, amazing ambience, yummy pizzas, superb muzik and a great crowd. The blues night on November 25th at the Timbre was a night to remember.

The Line-Up

  • Steve White - Acoustic One Man Band

  • Ublues (Danny Loong, Francis Chan & Gary Tan)

  • Kelvin "Smokey" Ng

  • A few other jammers

Steve White demonstrated what a man can possibly do single handedly. He sang, played acoustic guitar & harmonica, and tapped feet on his custom made floor box.

Steve White - Acoustic One Man Band
Steve White @Timbre
It was truly an experience to watch him live.

This is what people say about him:
“...Even the songs he hasn't written himself become his when he plays them. His style is expressive and highly percussive. Listen to Steve. Here is what you get: His guitar in a low tuning of his own invention, he plays a bass line while alternating a slap-string right hand style with rhythmic accents on the off-beats, playing the guitar-top like a drum. With a slide on his pinky, a wailing blues harmonica on a rack in front of his mouth filling the breaks between raspy-voiced verses, and his clog-shod feet drumming away on an amplfied footboard of his own design - the concert audience experiences a musical thunderstorm.”

Ublues (Universal Blues Band) & Smokey played the last set with other jammers. They jammed with Steve White as well.

Ublues & Smokey @Timbre

Danny on keyboard & lead guitar, Smokey on Harmonica, Francis on Bass, Gary on Drums & many others - last set was full of solos. They clearly enjoyed themselves and showed us a different side of blues.

Danny

Smokey

Ublues is an Australian-born, Singapore-based band who play now in exclusive events only. Know more about them here and here. This is what people say about them & their album "get on the blues train":
"Every few years in our local music scene, a musician or band appears which excites me when I listen to them. The UBlues band is one such band. They have become an important component of the Singapore music scene and they have also piqued the interest of Blues fans in the region and beyond. Blues music seems like a simple genre of music to play, mostly because most of the tunes only have three or four chord changes. It is an artform that is easy to learn but difficult to master. As a result, if not played well, I usually get restless and need to leave after two or three tunes. However, the UBlues Band plays the Blues with such authenticity and heart that I usually end up staying all night to listen to them. The Ublues band is the real thing."
- Jeremy Monteiro - Singapore's King of Swing and Cultural Medallion winner

"The Universal Blues Band plays and sings the blues with deep feeling and real taste. They are excellent musicians who compare favorably with the finest American blues bands. The intensity and honesty of their music truly moved me."
- Bruce Iglauer - Founder of multiple-Grammy nominated Alligator Records, USA

I ended up learning a lot about the blues genre of muzik and I know I will surely explore it further in future.

All My Loving

Close your eyes and I'll kiss you,
Tomorrow I'll miss you;
Remember I'll always be true.
And then while I'm away,
I'll write home ev'ry day,
And I'll send all my loving to you.

I'll pretend That I'm kissing
the lips I am missing
And hope that my dreams will come true.
And then while I'm away,
I'll write home ev'ry day,
And I'll send all my loving to you.

All my loving I will send to you.
All my loving, darling I'll be true.

Close your eyes and I'll kiss you,
Tomorrow I'll miss you:
Remember I'll always be true.
And then while I'm away,
I'll write home ev'ry day,
And I'll send all my loving to you

All my loving I will send to you.
All my loving darling I'll be True.
All my loving All my loving ooh
All my loving I will send to you

Day Tripper

Got a good reason for taking the easy way out
Got a good reason for taking the easy way out now

She was a day tripper, one way ticket yeah
It took me so long to find out, what I found out

She's a big teaser, she took me half the way there
She's a big teaser, she took me half the way there now

She was a day tripper, one way ticket yeah
It took me so long to find out, what I found out

Tried to please her, she only played one night stands
Tried to please her, she only played one night stands now

She was a day tripper, Sunday driver yeah
It took me so long to find out, what I found out

Day tripper
Day tripper yeah

Day tripper
Day tripper yeah...

And I Love Her...

I give her all my love
That's all I do
And if you saw my love
You'd love her too
I love her

She gives me ev'rything
And tenderly
The kiss my lover brings
She brings to me
And I love her

A love like ours
Could never die
As long as I
Have you near me

Bright are the stars that shine
Dark is the sky
I know this love of mine
Will never die
And I love her

Bright are the stars that shine
Dark is the sky
I know this love of mine
Will never die
And I love her

Anytime At All

Any time at all, any time at all, any time at all , all
you've gotta do is call and I'll be there.
If you need somebody to love, just look into my eyes, I'll
be there to make you feel right.
If you're feeling sorry and sad, I'd really sympathize.
Don't you be sad, just call me tonight.
Any time at all, any time at all, any time at all , all
you've gotta do is call and I'll be there.
If the sun has faded away, I'll try to make it shine,
there's nothing I won't do
If you need a shoulder to cry on I hope it will be mine.
Call me tonight, and I'll come to you.
Any time at all, any time at all, any time at all , all
you've gotta do is call and I'll be there.
Any time at all, all you've gotta do is call and I'll be there

If I Fell

If I fell in love with you
would you promise to be true
And help me understand
'Cause I've been in love before
And I've found that love is more
Than just holding hands

If I gave my heart to you
I must be sure from the very start
that you would love me more than her

If I trust in you, oh please
don't run and hide,
if I love you too, oh please
don't hurt my pride like her

'Cause I couldn't stand the pain
And I would be sad
If our new love was in vain

So I hope you see that I
would love to love you
And that she will cry
when she learns we are two

'Cause I couldn't stand the pain
And I would be sad
If our new love was in vain

So I hope you see that I
would love to love you
And that she will cry
when she learns we are two
If I fell in love with you

:-)

Paint It Black

Brian's Sitar-ing is mind-bogglingly cool :)

Lyrics

I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes
I see a line of cars and theyre all painted black
With flowers and my love both never to come back
I see people turn their heads and quickly look away
Like a new born baby it just happens evry day
I look inside myself and see my heart is black
I see my red door and it has been painted black
Maybe then Ill fade away and not have to face the facts
Its not easy facin up when your whole world is black

No more will my green sea go turn a deeper blue
I could not foresee this thing happening to you
If I look hard enough into the settin sun
My love will laugh with me before the mornin comes

I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes
Hmm, hmm, hmm,...
I wanna see it painted, painted black
Black as night, black as coal
I wanna see the sun blotted out from the sky
I wanna see it painted, painted, painted, painted black
Yeah!

Steve White Blues Returns to Singapore!

Steve White

For the month of November, 24th and 25th, Audio Electric Research (AER) and Martin Guitar & Co are proud to present acoustic blues entertainer, Steve White from the USA.

For those who missed him last year and also for his fans who cannot get enough of him, here's your opportunity!

A unique and talented acoustic blues performer, Steve White sings, plays the harmonica and his Martin guitar (installed with AER pickup), taps his feet on his custom made floor box, all amplified through his AER Domino acoustic amp. It's always entertaining to watch his unusual performance.

Steve is the ultimate self-contained band, a tornado of synchronous polyrhythms lubricated with viscous swamp funk and propelled by serpentines slides and undulations. Earthy, rural idioms are infused with a worldly sophistication and autoorchestrated with masterful, wary lyrics, engaging vocals, compelling footwork, and mouthharp playing that defies the presumed limitations of a neck brace holder.

His songs document life's journey and the stops along the way, new vistas' around the corner, capturing the images and chance encounters and magical mystery spots. He grew up in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and later studied painting and fine arts in the US.

What is Progressive Rock?

Excerpts From Wikipedia...

Progressive rock artists reject the limitations of popular music and aspire to create music for serious listening, often aspiring to the sophistication of jazz and classical music, sometimes incorporating folk and world music influences in as well.

...progressive rock is very much a musician's form of music, designed to be analyzed, studied and appreciated by knowledgeable listeners. Although some progressive rock artists have enjoyed phenomenal success, progressive rock by nature appeals to a more specialized set of listeners than the broader target audiences of popular music.

The major acts that defined the genre in the 1970s are Jethro Tull, Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Emerson, Lake & Palmer (ELP) , Rush, Gentle Giant, Supertramp, Van der Graaf Generator and King Crimson.

Malmsteen in Singapore!

Yngwie Malmsteen

A rare chance to experience one of rock's most gifted and influential guitar players unleashing his devistating fusion of neo-classical rock, metal and blues in Singapore today at Fort Canning Park. This tour is in support of Yngwie's latest release "Unleash The Fury".

Yngwie Johann Malmsteen's "Unleash The Fury World Tour" also features RISING FORCE with Dougie White on Vocals, Derek Sherinian on Keyboards, Mick Cervino on Bass & Patrik Johansson on Drums. Yngwie J. Malmsteen arrived on LA's Sunset Strip in the early 1980's with little more than a Fender guitar and a spare pair of jeans, yet quickly established his place in guitar history as one of rock's premier virtuoso guitarists. Along with Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Eddie Van Halen, and a handful of others, Yngwie has dominated the world of solo guitar for two decades. Yngwie created a guitar sound and approach that is totally unique and different from any other rock guitarist. An ear-searing blend of metallic bombast and classical beauty. He has elevated classical chops to new heights, adding a distinctive European stamp. Both enchantingly dark-sounding and blindingly fast. His 1984 album, "Yngwie J. Malmsteen's Rising Force," established neo-classical melodic rock.

A legend in both style and technique, Yngwie's long career reached new heights when his totally classical work for orchestra and solo electric guitar, "Concerto Suite," was released, proving that his classical credentials were genuine. A respected musician among both his peers and his fans, Yngwie continues to play and compose at a level of mastery that many career musician only dream of.
